There are many reasons why people seek therapy.

Whether you are looking to explore different ways of living your life or going through difficult times or relationships, feeling overwhelmed and not knowing which way to turn, therapy can offer you space to think about, and to work through your situation.

Therapy provides a safe space for you to begin the journey of exploration.

You may be searching for answers or reasons to understand feelings such as anxiety and fear, anger, loss and sadness. Therapy enables you to reflect on your life experiences. Through telling and sharing your story, you may begin to find the answers you are looking for.

About Me

My name is Satvinder Kalyan, I am a qualified counsellor and psychotherapist and welcome you to my private practice. I have worked in health and social care since 2000 as a qualified social worker.  I have had the opportunity of working with children and adults from a range of different backgrounds and from all walks of life. In the last four years, I worked with West Kent Mind both as part of my training and as a volunteer counsellor.

Throughout life, my encounter with individuals has been informative. I believe that we hold the answers within ourselves.  When we are going through difficulties in life, we can become overwhelmed, and at such times turning to therapy can help.  I believe in the power of ‘the self’ and believe that we all have an individual story to tell.  Through counselling and psychotherapy, I provide a safe space for you to start your journey.   My therapeutic approach is relational, I strongly believe that good therapeutic outcomes are largely dependent on the quality of the relationship that the client and their therapist share.

Approach

My therapeutic approach is relational,
I strongly believe that good therapeutic outcomes are largely dependent
on the quality of the relationship that the client and their therapist share.

I am an integrative counsellor and psychotherapist. The distinction I make between counselling and psychotherapy is the length of therapy, short-term, or long-term.

My roots are in humanistic, psychodynamic, and person-centred theory.  Working integratively enables me to tailor the therapy to individual needs which means I am able to draw from a range of therapeutic modalities.  It is my intention to provide therapy that will assist you in reaching your goals.

Please click here for information on different therapeutic approaches.

Based on the information that you provide and the specifics of your situation, we will work together to identify the most suitable approach for you. This is part of the therapeutic process itself.  Together, we will periodically review and exchange feedback regarding the progress.  This will also help us to think about the length of therapy, whether is short term or long term.

There is no obligation for you to stay in therapy with me and I will do my best to refer you to another therapist if you feel that is the right choice for you.  Usually, we should get a good sense of how we might get along from our initial meeting, however, if you feel you are not benefiting from therapy, you may discontinue therapy at any time. To finish counselling or psychotherapy you will need to give notice of not less than one session.  The aim of this is to provide time to resolve any unfinished issues and finish in a safe manner.

Who & How

I work individually, with both adults and children.
Through counselling and psychotherapy,
I provide a confidential, safe space for you to start your journey.

WHO I WORK WITH

I work individually, with both adults and children. If you think you or your child would benefit from my services, please get in touch with me.

Adults: Initial phone assessment is free. It is an opportunity for you to ask any questions that you might have.  The first session will involve a general history and exploration of what you want to achieve in therapy.

Children: Initial assessment/pre-meet is free. I will speak to parents on their own, face to face or over the phone, for a preliminary meeting before completing an assessment/first session with your child. This initial session is vital for me to gather information, and it allows parents to freely express their concerns.

HOW I WORK

I am following the guidelines of the NHS and the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (my professional body) to ensure the health and wellbeing of my clients and myself.

Face-to-Face

If you opt for face-to-face sessions, they will take place in my counselling room which is located in central Tunbridge Wells. The venue is within walking distance from Tunbridge Railway Station or if driving, car parking is available at the shopping centre.  Unfortunately, the venue is not wheelchair accessible.

Online Option

If you opt for online sessions, they will be through a secure online internet-based platform called Zoom which you can download for free onto a computer laptop or mobile phone.  I already have an online Zoom account. If you wish to use Zoom you will be asked to provide your email address as your Zoom contact email to which I will send Zoom meeting invites to. Once you have registered, we should be able to connect and see and speak to each other online when we have given each other our contact email addresses.

Download zoom here

To ensure the continuity of a session and in case of any internet disruption I will have my mobile phone on and charged during any Zoom session meaning we can continue the session by phone.
